January 6, 2023   | January 6, 2023  |

Carrie Ann Edwards is the sister of one of the most successful Canadian singers Shania Twain. She has sold over 100 million records, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time in the industry. Brought up in Timmins, Ontario, Carrie’s sister Shania started doing musical gigs early on in local bars and restaurants.

Besides, what does Carrie herself do now? She also has another biological sister excluding Shania. All of them grew up in a broken family, where her parents divorced when Carrie was still a child and their stepfather was abusive.

Well, here in the following article, we are going to explore much more about Carrie and her family. Let’s get started!

Carrie Ann Edwards Was Born in The Mid-1960s: Her Parents’ Tumultuous Marriage

Shania Twain’s sister Carrie Ann Edwards was born in the mid-1960s, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada but spent most of her childhood days in Timmins, Ontario. As for her parents, Carrie is the daughter of Sharon (mother) and Clarence Edwards (father). She also has one more sister named Jill.

As said above, Carrie and her sisters’ childhood was full of troubles. It all began when her parents Clarence and Sharon divorced. At the time of their separation, her sister Twain was only two years old.

Later on, Carrie along with her mother and sisters moved to Timmins, a gold-mining town 500 miles north of Toronto. And, her biological father Clarence never looked back and went out of his way to raise his children.

Thus, it might also be the reason that Shania doesn’t have the surname ‘Edwards,’ instead, the singer uses her stepfather’s last name ‘Twain.’

Her Mother Remarried Jerry Twain Who Also Adopted Carrie and Her Sisters

After Ann Edwards’ mother made her move to Timmins, Sharon came across her second husband Jerry Twain and they married in 1971. Carrie’s stepdad Jerry was an Ojibwa forester and mining prospector.

After their marriage, Sharon and Jerry also became parents of two sons, Mark and Darryl (Carrie Ann’s half-brothers). Later on, Jerry adopted all of Sharon’s daughters and got them membership in his First Nation tribe.

However, the marital relationship between her mother Sharon, and her adoptive father Jerry was also stormy as they were often involved in altercations while together. At the time, Carrie’s mother even struggled with depression. Eventually, her sister Shania took her mother and her siblings to a homeless shelter in Toronto. But, Sharon came back to her second hubby Jerry in 1981.

Carrie Ann Edwards’ Childhood in Poverty

As we have already mentioned above Carrie is from a poor family where food was often scarce. Thus, her sister Twain started singing at the mere age of eight. She used to sing at local bars and her main motive, at the time, was to try to pay her family’s bills. Although Twain wasn’t interested in singing in those bars, the artist believes it was her strong passion for music. She said of the ordeal,

“My deepest passion was music and it helped. There were moments when I thought, ‘I hate this.’ I hated going into bars and being with drunks. But I loved the music and so I survived.”

Both Her Mother and Stepdad Died in a Car Accident

Unfortunately, Carrie’s mother Sharon Morrison Twain and her stepdad Jerry Norman Twain were killed in a car crash. At the time, Country Music Singer, Shania was only 21.

On the other hand, her mom was 42 while her stepdad was 40 at the time of their demise. Both of them are buried at Timmins Memorial Cemetery.

Carrie’s Stepfather Jerry Twain Was an Abusive

Her sister Shania Twain said that her stepdad Jerry Twain physically and emotionally abused her while in the house. The Country singer even said that She used to flatten her boobs to make it unnoticed in her childhood house. The singer said,

“I hid myself and I would flatten my boobs. I would wear bras that were too small for me, and I’d wear two, play it down until there was nothing girl about me.”

Despite the streak of miseries Carrie and her sisters went through initially, all of them are doing great jobs in their own rights now.

She further stated it “was just really a turning point for me — knowing that she was into the idea of participating and not just being there behind the scenes but taking that plunge, as well.”
