It has been reported by Victoria herself that throughout their marriage, Don was physically abusive toward her. In 2008, authorities even arrested Cornelius over spousal abuse charges. On November 14, 2008, he appeared in court where he pleaded not guilty over the abuse charges, but he ultimately changed it to no contest in 2009 for which he was put on 36 months probation.
All this happened after Victoria separated from Don, following her filing for divorce in 2007. Around the same time, Victoria Chapman aka Victoria Avila also filed for two separate restraining orders against her husband.
Don’s Last Marriage with Victoria Changed Him a Lot
After the divorce filing, the divorce was finalized in 2009. As for why their marriage failed, well, one of Don’s friends said it was because both of them were from different sides of the world.
At the time of Don’s death, one of his close pals over 30 years old, said at the time of his death,
“He was swayed by a few people to invest in projects that didn’t pan out and the last marriage in many ways destroyed his mind, heart and his soul. He was never the same after that marriage.’’
From the above statement alone it is imperative that Victoria and Don really weren’t a great match. What’s more, Don was so frustrated with his marriage to his second wife that in his declaration of ending his marriage to Viktoria, he said,
“I am 72-years-old. I have significant health issues. I want to finalize this divorce before I die.”
When their divorce was finalized, Don was ordered to pay $10,000 a month in spousal support, buy her a house for under $1,095,000, and also pay tuition fees for his adopted daughter Viktoria.
Apart from this, Victoria also received both of her late ex-husband’s insurance policies worth $300,000 after his death.

On February 1st, 2012, Don tragically passed away due to a self-inflicting gunshot wound. At around 4 am, his son called the police department to check on his dad after reports of a shooting from his home in LA.
The late TV host was rushed to Cedars Sinai Hospital where he was unfortunately pronounced dead. According to reports, he was suffering from seizures for the past 15 years that arose from complications after his brain operation in 1982.
